The Cote Rotie, in the northern Rhone, is a red wine appellation. The slopes are distinguished as either Cote Blonde (which produce wines for early drinking) or Cote Brune (associated with firmer, more durable all-Syrah wines). The finest Cote Rotie is meant to be a blend of the two. Syrah is trained on the vine in a distinctive way on these slopes
Only 75 cases of Stephan's Côte-Rôtie 2003 came to America. 10% Viognier has been added to this heady, opulent cuvée full of smokey, dark cocoa and licorice.
Wine Spectator 94 (12/2006): Very lush and dark, with primal aromas of crushed grapes and raspberries. Mocha and plum sauce notes are layered with dark cocoa, licorice and briar, and the long finish pumps out fruit, with a nice iron hint. Stays balanced, despite its forward, almost heady, profile. Drink now through 2018. 650 cases made.
