"Anselmo Mendes makes a range of alvarinhos, this selection aged four months on the lees. He hit is out of the park in 2016 with a wine that's all youthful intensity, driven by mineral notesof chipped sandstone and chalk, kelp-like in its taste of the sea, as pale white as a starched cotton shirt. Decant it for percebes (gooseneck barnacles) or cellar a few bottles. It will evolve for ten years or more."-Wine & Spirits
Why two producers from one region? When the producers are as different as their wines, there is room for both. Anselmo Mendes is the quintessential inside man - born the son of grape growers in Moncão, one of the two top regions (along with Melgaço) for Alvarinho, he has studied agronomy and oenology, worked in Bordeaux and now consults for many wineries
throughout Portugal. Indeed, just to keep it in the family, he was a consultant for Aphros in the early days. These wines are his babies, however, and they are both excellent and relatively plentiful.
