As more and more Burgundy lovers are getting priced out of the very region they love they are pushed to expand their boundries and discover the great wines in lesser-known appellations. Such is the case wit this outstanding Maranges 1er cru from an appellation located at the souther tip of the Côte de Beaune, near Santenay.
The winery takes back to the late 19th Century and has grown in size and quality since then. From an original 2 hectares to it's current 10 hectare in size. Annual production is around 50,000 but that number varies wildly based on harvest. The domaine focuses mainly on reds, and only 15% of the total production is white. Vineyard husbandry is done "sustainably" and the use of synthetic treatments is avoided at all costs - the winery favors using copper or sulphur.
La Fussière is the largest 1er Cru of Maranges, covering an area of almost 35ha. The Domaine owns a 1.5 hectare plot in La Fussière. Soil is clay-limestone but rich in limestone giving lots of bright, crunchy blueberry and red fruit notes, especially sour cherry. The vineyards are South-facing at about 300 meters above sea level. The grapes are harvested by hand and sorted in the vineyard and then again in the winery. Only indigenous yeast is used. The reds are de-stemmed (depending on the vintage a % of stem inclusion) then there is a cold maceration of 3-5 days followed by 2-3 weeks of fermentation done in cement tanks. The wine is aged in oak (20% new) for about 1 year.
