Valdelana Crianza is a red wine produced by the winery Valdelana, in the D.O Rioja.
The winery is located in El Ciego (La Rioja Alavesa) which has been looking after vineyards since the 16th century, ever since the Valdelana family acquired their first lands. Their wines reflect the centuries of experience that gone in to produce this product.
Valdelana Crianza is produced from the varietal Tempranillo (95%) and Mazuelo (5%).
The grapes grow in very specific conditions, permanently exposed to the sun because of their south facing location. The vines are low yielding and the soils are rich in chalk, there is a microclimate because of the protection provided by the Sierra Cantabria against the cold winds. The result is a very concentrated grape with very little water.
For production, a fermentation process at a controlled 27-28ºC for 12 days.
After the wine making process, Valdelana Crianza is aged for 12 months in French (60%) and American (40%) oak barrels. Ultimately, the wine is left to refine in the bottle for an additional 12 months more.
