Descendant of a family of winegrowers from the Douro Valley, Domingos Alves de Sousa abandoned in 1987 his career of civil engineer to dedicate himself, body and soul, to the exploration of the family's "Quintas" (estates). When this option was made, Domingos Alves de Sousa had already in mind to stop being a supplier of Port Wine for some exporting companies, and start the most arduous but also more compensating activity of producer-bottler of Douro wines.
He reorganized and joined his vines, searched theoretical knowledge of viticulture and winemaking attending different courses in Portugal and Bordeaux and gathered a team properly qualified. The construction of a modern cellar in Quinta da Gaivosa was the final step for the beginning of the production of wines with the grapes from the family's five "Quintas".
Since then, the wines from Domingos Alves de Sousa have been receiving recognition for its quality throughout the years, with various awards and references in wine magazines. This successful trail had a very special highlight in 1999: "Producer of the Year", by "Revista de Vinhos" ("Portuguese Wines Magazine") - the most important and prestigious award distinguishing a Portuguese wine producer.
