Koch is situated in a section of Baden known as the Kaiserstuhl, an area that's planted around an extinct volcano and famous for producing Baden's top wines. His vineyards are given lavish, organic care and have a health dose of cover crops around the old growth, massale selection vines smuggled back from Burgundy and Alsace. Specializing in the Burgundian varieties (Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris a.k.a. Grauburgunder, and Pinot Blanc a.k.a. Weißburgunder), Koch makes wines that have a silky, rich texture with an ultra-fine backbone of acidity. Everything is fermented in old barrique and foudre from Austria.
